Xiaomi Replaces MIUI With HyperOS: The End Of An Era

Xiaomi has unveiled its new operating system called HyperOS, which will replace MIUI. This officially marks the end of the 13-year-old MIUI skin on its devices. HyperOS will debut soon, starting with the upcoming Xiaomi 14 series. Here’s everything you need to know about the new MIUI replacement.

Xiaomi To Replace MIUI With HyperOS

In a post by Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun on X (Formerly Twitter), the company announced that HyperOS would debut starting with the Xiaomi 14 series. Furthermore, contrary to previous reports, this new OS will be available globally on all Xiaomi phones from 2024.

HyperOS is the company’s attempt at creating a unifying software experience across its wide range of products. The new OS will help it build an ecosystem across 200 product categories, which include smart home devices, wearables, smartphones, cars and more.

HyperOS Marks The End of MIUI
It will also end the 13-year-old reign of MIUI, the company’s legacy software skin, which lost its appeal over the years. Many complained the user interface was riddled with bugs and bloatware, which hampered the experience. The company has been developing HyperOS since 2017 to create its own ecosystem. This will allow users to control and manage devices from one place.

According To Lei Jun, HyperOS is “based on the integration of the deeply evolved Android and the self-developed Vela system, completely rewriting the underlying architecture, and preparing a public base for the Internet of Everything for tens of billions of devices and tens of billions of connections in the future”.

There is no clarity on whether this new OS is based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project) or if it will adopt a similar approach to Huawei’s Harmony OS. Xiaomi has not mentioned any details or images about the user interface of HyperOS. However, it will soon arrive in the upcoming Xiaomi 14 series later this month.
