Google Pixel 8 Series: Hidden USB-C DisplayPort Output Discovered

The Google Pixel 8 series supports DisplayPort output via the USB-C port. This is despite Google denying the presence of any such feature on the phone. A new discovery reveals users can send DisplayPort signals to broadcast to an external screen using the phone’s USB-C port.

Pixel 8 Series Supports DisplayPort Output

In a post by Android enthusiast Mishaal Rahman, the Pixel 8 series was verified to support DisplayPort output through a USB-C port. However, Google had denied support for the feature in a statement to Android Authority earlier. It seems the company has chosen to deactivate the feature via software.

Rahman shared a workaround to activate the feature by rooting the device. In the USB Config file for the Pixel 8, Google has deactivated the DisplayPort property by default, but rooting the phone allows you to circumvent it.

While this method initially failed, one of the testers later achieved success after using a USB-C to USB-C cable, which was DisplayPort compatible. This means that you will need a compatible DisplayPort cable and a rooted device to enable the functionality on your device.

However, it is not recommended that you root your device as it will void your warranty and also brick your device if you are not careful enough.

Google Could Enable The Feature In Future Update
Google could add this feature through a software update in the future. It could arrive in the QRP1 or QRP2 update early next year. Reports claim the company was also working on a desktop mode exclusive to the Pixel 8 series but cancelled it before launch.

Other phones, like the iPhone 15 series, can transmit 4K HDR videos to an external display through the USB-C port. There is a high possibility that Google is working on optimizing the feature to release it in a future update.

Apple plans to add a USB-C port to its Magic accessories lineup soon. These include the Apple Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad and the Magic Keyboard. The company is transitioning all its products with lightning ports to USB-C after the launch of the Apple iPhone 15 series.

USB-C Apple Magic Accessories To Arrive Soon

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Apple 2023 product lineup is an iterative upgrade until the company offers better USB-C integration across all products. Gurman claims these interim products will have modest upgrades to keep customers loyal to the Apple ecosystem.

The new Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad and Magic Keyboard will arrive with the USB-C port next month. It will launch along with the iMac next month. The company also plans to launch the standard AirPods with USB-C port next year. Apple has already released the AirPods Pro 2nd Gen with a USB-C port.

Adding the USB-C to the Magic lineup could be an interesting change, as the current models have been criticized for having a lightning port at the bottom. However, there is no information on whether Apple will change the position of the port or not.

Gurman further predicts the AirPods Max will also transition to the USB-C port but does not provide the exact timeline. He also claims accessories like the MagSafe Battery Pack and MagSafe Duo will return with the USB-C port.

The company is also working on the 10th anniversary Apple Watch, dubbed the “Series X”, with new features and design. It will be the most significant overhaul to the Apple Watch series, with a thinner case and a new way to attach bands. Furthermore, it will also have a blood pressure monitor and AI health coaching service.

Next year, Apple is also planning new iPads with OLED displays, an M3 processor for the MacBook lineup, bigger iPhones, and an Apple GPT AI model. Apple is expected to generate 123.5 billion dollars of revenue during the holiday season.

Matte Black iPhones And MacBooks Could Soon Become A Reality

Apple is known for being picky when offering products in different colours. The company could soon start offering a new colour on future MacBooks and iPhones. According to a new patent, the Cupertino giant could launch matte black iPhones and MacBooks in the future.

Matte Black iPhones and MacBooks to Arrive Soon

Apple filed a patent back in 2020 for the perfect matte black finish on a MacBook, and the company has now filed another patent describing the process. While the company has launched devices in a matte black finish in the past, the process itself has proven to be a challenge. Initially filed in 2020, the patent has now received approval by the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO)

The process entails applying an anodized layer to the metal substrate and subsequently etching it to create light-absorbing properties within the material. Furthermore, it outlines various concepts for using this technology, including in devices such as tablets, smartphones, smartwatches, and laptops.

Apple Has Created Products With Matte Black Finish In The Past

Apple wants to produce a device with a genuine black tone having no gaps and reflections. The finish should be consistent enough to absorb under any angle or lighting conditions. The 2006 MacBook was the closest attempt of the company in achieving a matte black finish. The laptop was available in two variants: white and matte black, with the latter being more expensive due to its finish.

The main challenge is that anodized metal can reflect a lot of light and appear glossy. Apple has tried to solve this problem by describing its process in the patent. The company released the Apple iPhone 7 with a matte black finish but failed to garner enough interest.

Currently, it offers a Space Black and Midnight colour option on the Apple iPhone 14 series. Apple is all set to unveil the Apple iPhone 15 series at the Wonderlust event on September 12th, and it would be too soon to expect another iPhone in a matte black finish.

Apple iPhone 14 Relaunch With USB-C: Know More Details

There is widespread anticipation that Apple will transition to the USB-Type C Port with its upcoming iPhone 15 series. However, a new leak suggests that the company will also introduce the USB-Type C port to some of the iPhone 14 models.

iPhone 14 To Get A New Charging Port?
According to a tweet by Aaron, an Apple developer and writer, the company will upgrade some of the existing models with a USB-Type C port. While analyzing the code for tvOS 17 beta 5, he found the mention of two iPhone models which were not present in the earlier builds. This code differs from the reference made to iPhone 15 models in previous tvOS builds.

The code contained references to six iPhone models, with four of them referring to the upcoming iPhone 15 lineup, while two are from the existing iPhone 14 series. The two models from the iPhone 14 lineup are the Apple iPhone 14 and the Apple iPhone 14 Plus.

Why Switch To USB-Type C?
Apple is planning to make the switch to USB-Type C to comply with the latest EU legislation, which requires all devices sold within the region to have a common charging port. The law will be in effect by 2024 and requires phone manufacturers to provide charging via the USB-Type C port.

Back in 2012, Apple introduced the lightning port with the launch of the iPhone 5, but this proprietary port has often faced criticism for its slower transfer speeds and incompatibility with other devices. However, the company has been gradually shifting to USB-Type C port since it launched the Apple iPad Pro in 2018.

Apple often continues selling its older phones at a discount after launching a new iPhone lineup. This means that the company will need to relaunch the iPhone 14 with a USB-Type C Port to allow the sale of its devices so it can continue selling the phone in the EU. If the rumours turn out to be true, it would be the first time that the company has relaunched an existing product and upgraded it with a newer port.
