Simultaneously, wrist watches have become a lesson in technological redundancy for many people. Ask a friend for the time of day and they’re just as likely to glance at their smartphone as they are to look at an actual wrist-bound timepiece. The newest wave of smart watches aims to change all that

Smart watches are digital watches that do more – a lot more – that your old analog time tracking device. We’re not talking about that once-amazing calculator watch that you had in elementary school. These are full-fledged digital tools.

Watches on the Rise
Smart watches haven’t exploded in popularity for various reasons. The technological hurdles are high. And the fashion faux pas are, well, unforgivable.

Let’s start with the tech side. Because human wrists are only so big, wrist watches must be extremely compact. In turn, this means the display must be small. That means a populace accustomed to ridiculously oversized smartphone screens must learn to use a substantially smaller interface on a smart watch.

t also means that software developers must find intuitive graphical interfaces that fit a watch’s limited display area. As programmers who create smartphone apps can attest, this challenge can make or break a product.

Battery life is another notable design challenge. Current battery technology will only power a glowing smart watch with myriad functions for a few hours. After that, it’s back to the charger.

And then, of course, there’s the fashion aspect of smart watches. Like it or not, a watch is a fashion item, and it reflects directly on your ability to dress yourself properly in the morning. Most manufacturers are still struggling to combine features and fashion in ways that don’t shriek “geek.” The designs tend to be clunky, obnoxiously large and likely to clash with any wardrobe that rises above casual.

Product to Watch
So far, no smart watch has captured the imagination and devotion of consumers. With so many companies dumping so much time and money into these products, it seems likely that at some point, a smart watch will strike industry gold.

It may be that the rumored products from Apple and Google could be the ones to succeed. Apple is known for its ability to combine usefulness with aesthetics, and Google’s deep pockets and sprawling Android user base could help put a smart watch over the top.

Until the first home-run product arrives, it’s anyone’s guess as to where watches will go from here. Perhaps they’ll always be considered smartphone accessories, permanently tethered to a more powerful handheld device. Or maybe an innovative user interface and better battery life will result in watches that cast off master gadgets as unnecessary, and perhaps … unfashionable.

It might be that the limited real estate of a watch is simply too difficult of a hurdle for contemporary technologies to overcome. At the moment, each manufacturer is basically going fishing – throwing out their lines of products in the hopes that at least one of them will snag a following. So far, Pebble (perhaps the biggest underdog in the entire lineup) has done best, selling more than 250,000 units in its initial offering.

If such a small company can find a niche with its digital contraptions, you can bet that bigger corporations are working to do the same.

China’s Huawei poised to overcome U.S. ban with return to 5G phone market

SHENZHEN, CHINA – China’s Huawei Technologies is plotting a return to the 5G smartphone industry by the end of this year, according to research firms, signaling a comeback after a U.S. ban on equipment sales decimated its consumer electronics business.

Huawei should be able to procure 5G chips domestically using its own advances in semiconductor design tools along with chipmaking from Semiconductor Manufacturing International Co. (SMIC), three third-party technology research firms covering China’s smartphone sector said.

The firms, citing industry sources including Huawei suppliers, spoke on condition of anonymity because of confidentiality agreements with clients.

Huawei declined to comment. SMIC did not respond to a request for comment.

A return to the 5G phone market would mark a victory for the company that for almost three years said it was in “survival” mode. Huawei’s consumer business revenue peaked at 483 billion yuan ($67 billion) in 2020, before plummeting by almost 50% a year later.

The Shenzhen-based tech giant once vied with Apple and Samsung to be the world’s biggest handset maker until rounds of U.S. restrictions beginning in 2019 cut its access to chipmaking tools essential for producing its most advanced models.

The U.S. and European governments have labeled Huawei a security risk, a charge the company denies. Since then, Huawei has only sold limited batches of 5G models using stockpiled chips.

Stuck selling last-generation 4G handsets, Huawei fell from most rankings worldwide last year, when sales reached a low point, though it rose to a 10% market share in China in the first quarter, according to consultancy Canalys.

One of the research firms said it expected Huawei to use SMIC’s N+1 manufacturing process, though with a forecast yield rate of usable chips below 50%, 5G shipments would be limited to around 2 million to 4 million units. A second firm estimated shipments could reach 10 million units, without providing further details.

Huawei shipped 240.6 million smartphones worldwide in 2019, its peak year, according to Canalys, before selling its Honor unit that accounted for nearly a fifth of shipments that year.

The state-backed China Securities Journal newspaper this month reported Huawei had raised its 2023 mobile shipment target to 40 million units from 30 million at the start of the year, without referencing a return to 5G phones.

Huawei could produce 5G versions of flagship models like the iPhone rival P60 this year, with new launches likely in early 2024, the three research firms said, adding they were basing such predictions on information they had received via checks with contacts in Huawei’s supply chain and recent company announcements.

However, U.S. restrictions cut Huawei off from Google’s Android operating system and the bundle of developer services upon which most Android apps are based, limiting Huawei handsets’ appeal outside of China.

The research firms noted Huawei in March announced it had made breakthroughs in electronic design automation (EDA) tools for chips produced at and above 14 nanometer (nm) technology.

Chip design companies use EDA software to produce the blueprints for chips before they are mass manufactured at fabs.

The research firms, citing their own industry sources, believe Huawei’s EDA software could be used with SMIC’s N+1 manufacturing process to make chips at the equivalent of 7 nm, the powerful semiconductors typically used in 5G phones.

Washington barred SMIC from obtaining an advanced chipmaking tool called an EUV machine from Dutch firm ASML that is critical in the process of making 7 nm chips. But some analysts have found signs SMIC has nevertheless managed to produce 7 nm chips by tweaking simpler DUV machines it could still purchase freely from ASML.

The second research firm said it noticed Huawei had asked SMIC to produce chip components below 14 nm this year for 5G products.

While the cause of laptop battery errors can be rather mysterious, there are a number of ways to work out what the problem is and how to fix it.

1.Plug your laptop in. It’s possible your laptop’s battery is just flat, so before you begin panicking, try plugging the laptop in and connecting it to a power source. Wait for at least 15 minutes, then try turning it on.

3.Give your laptop room to cool. If your laptop has been left in the sun or you’ve been using it while in bed, the battery could be overheating. 4.Update Windows. Whether you’re running Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10, it’s always important to keep the operating system up-to-date to keep not just the software running smoothly but the hardware as well. A Windows update can also scan your laptop for any issues, like the no battery detected one, and fix them.

5.Run the Power troubleshooter. Select Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Power > Run the troubleshooter to scan your Windows laptop for issues directly related to a laptop battery not detected.

6.Check the battery status. Open the Device Manager, select Batteries, then right-click your laptop’s battery and select Properties. If you see text stating your device is working properly, then your battery is fine and the no battery detected bug is likely caused by something else. If you don’t see this message, your battery may be damaged and you may need to replace it.

7.Update the battery’s device drivers. Open Device Manager, then select Batteries > your laptop’s battery name > Driver > Update Driver > Search automatically for updated driver software.

8.Power cycle your laptop and remove the battery. If your laptop thinks there’s no battery present, perform a full shutdown, unplug all cables and power sources, physically remove the battery, press the power button for at least 15 seconds, place the battery back in, reconnect the charging cable, and then power on your laptop as per usual. If given a startup prompt, select Start Windows Normally.

9.Uninstall the battery and power cycle. Go to Device Manager, select Batteries, right-click your battery name and the Microsoft AC Adapter, then select Uninstall device for each. Once this is done, power cycle your laptop.

10.Reset the BIOS defaults. Turn on your Windows laptop and access the BIOS Setup. Select Restore Defaults, then save, exit, and start your laptop as usual.

11.Use HP Support Assistant. If you own a laptop made by HP, you should have a program called HP Support Assistant pre-installed. Open HP Support Assistant and select Troubleshoot to perform a battery test. This test may detect why exactly your battery is not being detected and can provide you with specific solutions.

How Lithium-ion Batteries Work

Lithium-ion batteries power the lives of millions of people each day. From laptops and cell phones to hybrids and electric cars, this technology is growing in popularity due to its light weight, high energy density, and ability to recharge.

So how does it work?

THE BASICS
A battery is made up of an anode, cathode, separator, electrolyte, and two current collectors (positive and negative). The anode and cathode store the lithium. The electrolyte carries positively charged lithium ions from the anode to the cathode and vice versa through the separator. The movement of the lithium ions creates free electrons in the anode which creates a charge at the positive current collector. The electrical current then flows from the current collector through a device being powered (cell phone, computer, etc.) to the negative current collector. The separator blocks the flow of electrons inside the battery.

CHARGE/DISCHARGE
While the battery is discharging and providing an electric current, the anode releases lithium ions to the cathode, generating a flow of electrons from one side to the other. When plugging in the device, the opposite happens: Lithium ions are released by the cathode and received by the anode.

ENERGY DENSITY VS. POWER DENSITY
The two most common concepts associated with batteries are energy density and power density. Energy density is measured in watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg) and is the amount of energy the battery can store with respect to its mass. Power density is measured in watts per kilogram (W/kg) and is the amount of power that can be generated by the battery with respect to its mass. To draw a clearer picture, think of draining a pool. Energy density is similar to the size of the pool, while power density is comparable to draining the pool as quickly as possible.

How to Transfer Contacts From Android to iPhone

This app pulls together all the data on your Android device—contacts, text messages, photos and videos, calendar, email accounts, website bookmarks—and then imports them to your new iPhone over Wi-Fi. The process couldn’t be simpler.

While it transfers your data, it doesn’t transfer your Android apps. Instead, it makes suggestions from the App Store based on the apps you have on your Android device. Matching free apps are suggested for download during the transfer. Matching paid apps are added to your App Store Wishlist for later purchase.

Use Your SIM Card to Transfer Contacts
If you are only interested in moving your contacts and not your other data, you can use the SIM card in your Android phone. Since you can store address book data on an Android SIM card, you can back up your contacts there and move them to your iPhone (the SIM cards need to be the same size in both devices, of course). All iPhones beginning with iPhone 5 use Nano SIMs.Here’s what you need to do:

1.On your Android device, launch your Contacts app, tap on the menu button, and navigate to Settings. Find the Import/Export setting and tap it.
2.Tap the Export button. Then choose to export to the SIM card.
3.Wait for the contacts to be exported to your SIM card.
4.When the export is complete, remove the SIM card from your Android phone and insert it into your iPhone.
5.On the iPhone, tap the Settings app to open it.
6.Tap Contacts (on some older versions of the iOS, this is Mail, Contacts, Calendars).
7.Tap Import SIM Contacts.
When the import is done, your contacts will be available in the pre-installed Contacts app on your iPhone.

Use Google to Transfer Contacts
You can use the power of the cloud to move your contacts from Android to iPhone. In this case, using your Google account is the best choice because of both Android and iPhone support for it.
To transfer your contacts, follow these steps:
1.On your Android device, back up your contacts to Google. The backup should happen automatically if you use your Google account on your device. You can also tap Settings > Account, the Google account you want to sync to, and then toggle Sync Contacts to On.
2.With that done, add your Google account to your iPhone.
3.When the account is set up, you may be able to enable contact syncing right away. If not, go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts and tap the Gmail account.
4.Move the Contacts slider to the On (green) position, and the contacts you added to your Google account will sync to the iPhone.
From now on, any change you make to your iPhone address book syncs to your Google account. You’ll have a complete copy of your address book in two places, safely backed up and ready to transfer to other devices as needed.

Laptop Battery Conditioning and Maintenance

If you always work while connected to AC power, the battery doesn’t discharge: its electrons stagnate, and the battery’s life span is reduced. Make a habit of working on battery power at least once a month. It is a good idea to occasionally drain the battery all the way, then fully charge it before using battery power again. Putting your iBook or Powerbook to sleep for transport is another way to reduce battery life. It is better to shut down the laptop when it will not be used for several hours.

If you do use your laptop on battery power a lot, you may want to consider purchasing a spare battery. One thing to remember, though: batteries like to be used, not tucked away for months at a time. They will develop a diminished capacity if they are just sitting in your bag. Rotate your spare battery with your original one on a regular basis.

•Bright screen (use the brightness controls to dim the backlight)
•Hard drive access
•CD/DVD drive access (remove CD’s and DVD’s when you are not using them, and preferably use them only on AC power)

Windows 2000/XP:
•Right click on Desktop and select “Properties” from the menu.
•Select Screensaver tab.
•Click on “Power” button on the bottom right of the window.
•Choose among the following Power Schemes: Home/Office Desk, Portable/Laptop, Presentation, Always On, Minimal Power Management, and Max Battery. Each Power Scheme will display the length of idle time before your monitor and hard disks will be shut down, and the system will go into Standby or Hibernation modes.

Mac OSX:
•Click on the Blue Apple menu icon and select “System Preferences”.
•Select “Energy Saver”
•Choose from Normal, Better Battery Life, or Better Performance options.

Why Siri Only Runs on Apple Devices
Siri will probably always only work on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS because Siri is a major competitive difference for Apple. If you want all the cool things Siri does, you have to buy an iPhone or other Apple device. Apple makes the largest part of its money on hardware sales, so allowing such a compelling feature to run on its competitor’s hardware would hurt its bottom line. And that’s not something Apple, or any smart business, usually does.

Even though there’s no Siri for Android, Android has its own built-in, voice-activated intelligent assistants. In fact, there are actually multiple options for you to choose from.

Alternatives to Siri for Android
Android has a ton of options for voice assistants like Siri. Here’s are some of the most popular ones:

Alexa: Amazon’s Alexa, which is the voice of its Echo series of products, comes with Amazon’s Fire tablets and other products. Alexa can also be downloaded and run on Android phones. View at Google Play

Beware: There Are Lots of Fake Siri Apps
If you search the Google Play store for “Siri,” you’ll find a bunch of apps with Siri in their names. But watch out: those aren’t Siri.

Those are apps with voice features that are comparing themselves to Siri (for a short time, one even claimed to be the official Siri for Android) to piggyback on its popularity and name recognition and to entice Android users looking for Siri-type features. No matter what they say, they’re definitely not Siri and they’re not made by Apple. Apple has not released Siri for Android.
